Monday, 30.11.2009

Well, the Botanical Garden of Kapstadt has something. Especially a lot of Beauty. This was our first item on the program and I debauched in taking flower pics. Besides hundreds sorts of grass and pelargonia they have those pretty protea flowers, palms, cacti and trees from all over the world.

Afterwards we had a city tour though Capetown and then we finally got to the famous Waterfront. The dream of every Shopaholic, the nightmare of every purse. Shops and restaurants wherever you look, wonderful maritime style. We enjoyed our coffee respectively tea at the port with view to the Tablemountain.

After an adventurous taxi ride back to the hotel – where else can you get this: 9 people stacked in a taxi, the driver drives like a madman and no way to buckle up – we got ready quickly and were already back on our way to Mamma Sheila in Langa Township. She cooks a wonderful buffet for tour groups 3 times a week. Mamma Sheila is a real original and has a great sense of humour. To african sounds we even danced and then we had to leave the Township as it gets more dangerous the later you leave. But that was okay as some tour group members had a flight to Mauritius very early the next day and we also have to pack our stuff.

Sabinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00257940473816371099noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8225621089375157185.post-80313208248472741622009-11-30T22:49:00.000-08:002009-12-04T22:35:22.152-08:00Kapstadt - Halbinsel
Sonntag, 29.11.2009

Mei, so liab!

Sunday, 29.11.2009

Todays lap was laughable 250 km to the Cape of Good Hope. The first stop was Hout Bay where we entered a boat to Seal Island. It was windy, the sea rough and you could hear some „huch“ all over the boat...whatever, as the first seals came in sight at the port one Japanese tourist already freaked out. But so did we shortly after as we saw two dolphin backs in the water. And the seals! Awww, so cute! And so lovely to look at, while swimming or just laying on the rocks. And the babies! Sweet!

We were drowning in „Awwww“ cause the next stop was Boulder and now there were the penguins! You could stand there for hours just to watch them!

But of course we had to tear ourselves away and went back on the bus cause the Cap was waiting for us. With the Flying Dutchman Funicular we went up a bit, the last 100 steps we made afoot. At the lighthouse on the top one pic after the other was taken, what else...
At the Cape of Good Hope we took some group pics...of course. We've learned that the Cape of Good Hope isn't really the most southerly point of Africa, it's more in the east, where exactly, we have already forgotten again.

Saturday, 28.11.2009

Todays lap was ca. 490 km over Mossel Bay and Swellendam to Capetown. We went all the way down only about noon we had a wine tasting at the vineyard Neethlingshof. No, that wasn't a big deal and you really taste a bit of the wine only so refrain from the thought that afterwards a bus of drunken tourists was on the way! I don't know much about wine but now I know what I'll buy at home if I have guests.

In the afternoon we arrived in Capetown and there was the question – up the Tablemountain at once or not. The thing was pretty depending on the weather so we've decided: let's go now, who knows what will be tomorrow.

So went went up the Tablemountain by ropeway. The cabin was rotating slowly so everyone had the chance on a good view downhill. As we arrived on top we made an one hour walk round about 1/3 of the mountain. The view from there was breathtaking! Before we went down again some dassies crossed our way.

While we were still souled by the mountain trip, Richard, our driver, took us to our 4* Hotel President.

Aber gut, was solls.

Friday, 27.11.2009

Right in the morning we started with wild animals again (bring 'em on!). We went to „Cango Croc and Cheetah Wildlife Farm“, a breeding station for cheetahs. One part of the farm is like a zoo. Our guide showed us the fish, parrots, fruitbats, crocodiles and turtles. Then we went to another part of the farm and then they were – the lovely big kitties. Cheetahs, white tigers, ordinary tigers, white lions...purrrr! Yes, you even had the chance to pet them, but of course this was quite expensive (even the money went to a foundation to help those animals, nothing commercially) and guess what – we were running out of time....of course.

I was a bit mad cause I wanted to stay longer at the cheetah farm instead of going to the next stop – the Cango Caves. I was rolling eyes – dripstone caves again, I already had them in Texas...sigh. Oh well, whatever. We had a nice guide, LeeAnn. She demonstrated the brilliant acoustics there twice by singing. The cave system expands at about 5 km into the mountain, 2,5 km are accessable for tourists, but you can also book adventure tours. What we've noticed is that the guides always switch off the lights in the cave to save the dripstones.

And then, ha, there was a highlight. We've visited an ostrich farm. The Safari Ostrich Farm to be exact. Of course we got a guided tour again to get to know hose animals. Afterwards there was the opportunity to sit on an ostrich, our friend Karli even tried to ride on one...both, Karli and the ostrich are fine btw.!! Two professional ostrich jockeys did a race for us. At the end of the tour some ladies could be found at the shops to get some ostrich leather stuff....

Thursday, 26.11.2009

After a short city tour in Port Elizabeth the journey went on along the Gardenroute to the Tsitsikamma Nationalpark which was on the program as compensation for the rainy Blyde River Canyon.

Wednesday, 25.11.2009

Today no adventures were on the programm but – we were the VIPs of the day. Means, we went with Werner ALONE at noon to Port Elizabeth while the rest of the tour group was exposed in Durban and abandoned to their fate (just kidding, a part went to the Botanical Garden, the rest to the aquarium) and came later with another plane. Before leaving Durban we had a short city tour and we walked the Indian Market.

Werner of course had a buddy who was selling spices there and so our luggage gained weight again but we couldn't resist...Currymixtures...lemonpepper...safran...vanilla...hmmm. Otherwise there was a lot of trash sold, mainly bags and indian clothes and I think, a lot of fake brand stuff.... Sonja wanted to save a parrot from his poor existance but it was clear we wouldn't be able to smuggle it to Germany and even if...if her parrot Charly would have agreed to her decision?

In Port Elizabeth it was wonderful sunny but also a bit stormy. Glad, I have some weight, you have to give Sonja a heavy bag so she doesn't get blown away, giggle.

The hotel was nice again, especially the interior. But as we didn't want to sit around til the others were supposed to arrive, we went to the Boardwalk with the busdriver and Werner to have coffee and cake. Yay.

Tuesday, 24.11.2009

A day off. Yay. I admit, personally I quit the trip to the Drake Mountains. I didn't want to get back in the cold at 3000 meters again so I caught me the first and more than deserved sunburn at the pool and beach while Sonja is still roaming the Drake Mountains...oh, here she's typing:

The 25 km ride with the Landrover to the Sanipass in Kingdom Lesoto was an experience of a different way, means 2 hours spinal disc massage. Especially the last 8 km hairpin curves were hard, also there was thunderstorm and it was cold. As we reached the top first of all we had a schnaps. Self-burnt from the Steiermark (Austria). In the highest bar of Africa Hermine finally found what she hadn't found the days before: glogg! We had some soup which warmed us inside and so we left the shed. The rain became less and the view was better now. A native woman showed us her shed and told us about her life. Our driver Steve, an Irish Southafrican translated and we went back on the jeep. The way down was even more adventurous though.

Rikscha-Fahrer in Durban

Die Hotel-Pool-Anlage

Der Indische Ozean
Sabinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00257940473816371099noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8225621089375157185.post-29318315852172673722009-11-24T12:46:00.000-08:002009-12-05T07:38:11.713-08:00Mkuze-Hluhluwe-Durban
Montag, 23.11.2009

Monday, 23.11.2009

Yes, meanwhile we're addicted to Safaris and so we were glad we could back in a jeep at the Hluhluwe Park to look for wild animals...there was a lack of lions again but this time the rhinos were the favs. But of course time went by too fast again.

Back to group pressure and back on the bus. We stopped at a Zulu village – or a mockup for tourists – who knows...well, whatever, we got an insight in Zulu culture, clothes, healing powers and dance. Well, again we got a Zulu-dance performance but this time the dancers were rocking the house, not like those in the morning... The dinner was a buffet, as always. There was salad, african bread (sweeter as we're used to), rice, chicken liver in a hot sauce (very good!), spinach, chicken stew and stripes of ostrich steak. And Ice cream and fruit salad for dessert.

Sunday, 22.11.1009

Well, that's how we like it – I already had to sweat in the early morning.

Thursday, 19.11.2009

First of all to all who had to stay at home and mischievous ones: the weather in Joahnnesburg is exactly how you imagine it when you go on vacation to Africa – yes, it's rainy, thundery and cold.
